The film industry has changed a lot over the last century.
At the beginning of the 20th century there weren’t any cinemas. Travelling ‘picture shows’ came to towns and people watched films in tents. The first permanent cinema was opened in Los Angeles in 1902. By 1907, there were more than 4 thousand cinemas in the USA. Audiences watched silent films with a pianist providing music.
Colour films replaced blacka nd white films in 1920s. However the introduction of sound revolutionized the cinema.
Some actors lost their jobs because they couldn’t act and speak at the same time or they didn’t have good voices.
In the 50s and 60s there were some experiments with 3D and smells. In the 1970s the surround sound became popular. The sound seemed to come from all directions.
Today film-makers can make computer-generated images and in the future we will probably be able to feel the same emotions and sensations as the characters in the films.
